Historical/Biographical Note

William J. Murray resided at 3 Hillsdale Avenue in Jamaica, NY. The house is now located at 90-42 171st Street. The house was completed on April 15, 1905. Mr. Murray’s previous residence was also in Jamaica. Mr. Murray was well known as a photographer of events that took place around New York City with his main focus being the areas of Jamaica and Far Rockaway. Mr. Murray was also one of the main proprietors of Murray Brothers General Store located in the Moriches Bay Area in Long Island.

Scope and Content Note

The William J. Murray Photograph Collection (339 photographs, 1890, 1897-1900, 1905-1910, 1914) contains photographs that explore various neighborhoods in Queens, NY. Mr. Murray lived in Queens during the early 1900’s and took many pictures of buildings, farms, and beaches. Many of the photographs within the collection are personal photographs of Mr. Murray’s family in outdoor events or around their home. There are photos dedicated to a military exhibition in Hempstead Plains, Garden City (1898), a reception for Admiral George Dewey (1899), and the Murray Brothers General Store in Center Moriches.

Provenance

Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dowse of Massachusetts donated the photographs to the Library in 1991.

Access Restrictions

Open for research without restrictions. Manuscripts are only available in the Archives at Queens Library, please call (718) 990-0770 for hours. Manuscript users will be required to complete the division's Manuscript Usage Form and deposit their photograph identification or Queens Borough Public Library card with a staff member. The identification will be returned to the user after she/he has returned the material. Manuscript users will deposit all their personal items behind the reference desk. Manuscript users must use the division's loose sheets of paper for note taking. To reiterate, no pen of any type is permitted. Paper and a pencil are available upon request. Manuscript users may be required to use special handling procedures depending on the conditions of the material.
