Nilda Tirado, Clip 8: 1964 New York World's Fair and Long Term Impact on Population

Nilda Tirado interviewed by Natalie Milbrodt

Time Period: 1950 - 2010

Ms. Tirado enjoyed going to the 1964 World's Fair and took numerous friends and family members who visited her. She fondly describes using her annual pass, going to the World of Tomorrow and eating international foods. She talks about the long term impact of the fair on the neighborhood. She believes that after the fair ended, many workers stayed in Flushing, greatly increasing the diversity of the area. One negative impact she saw was that many older homes were torn down. She says that if homeowners leave the area and people only rent apartments, the neighborhood will decline.
