- Aravella Simotas is a Greek-American New York State Assembly member for District no. 36, which covers Astoria and part of Long Island City. She describes the area as a "community of immigrants" whose demographics have changed over time. Her parents brought her to Astoria from Greece when she was six months old; her father worked in a delicatessen and eventually bought it. She talks about how she came into politics, the challenges of being a female and a new member in the Assembly, and the issues faced by the Astoria community. One such issue concerns small food businesses being hit by sudden changes in health and safety laws; she wrote a bill to ensure they have more advance warning of new regulations.
