Men, women and children approach the hotel from the bay side via the board walk. A tiny community on Fire Island, Water Island grew up around the White House Hotel, a prestigious beach hotel built in 1890. Its design is credited to its proprietor, Patchogue resident Edward O. Ryder, and it was reportedly frequented by the likes of Theodore Roosevelt and his family.
