Paul Graziano, is originally from Flushing. He is an urban planning and historic preservation consultant, and an advocate for preservation in four states. Mr. Graziano discusses the history of Flushing and its development from farmland to a suburban area. He studied urban planning at Hunter College, and in the late 1990's was instrumental in starting the Waldheim Neighborhood Association, a civic association that dealt with problems of the area including rezoning. He discusses his major project to survey the Flushing area in order to get landmark designation 1998-99. He also talks about struggles against developers, and the hostility from the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. Mr. Graziano also ran for city council on the Green Party ticket, winning 8% of the vote, which was unprecedented. His platform involved issues of rezoning reform, environmental preservation, and historic preservation.
