The collection is composed, principally, of the papers of a civil engineer and surveyor residing in Bellmore, Thomas D. Smith, accumulated during the course of his working on an improvement project(s) in the Far Rockaway area, especially the village of Far Rockaway itself, The papers are dated principally in the 1890s and for the most part are in typescript and include a few printed items.
