The collection, which covers the period of 1796 to 1844 (one or two items somewhat earlier) presumably consists of the papers of one individual alone, unless there were two persons father and son, perhaps who bore the same name.) Only in very rare instances is reference found to some other member of the King family. Several documents, especially the earlier dated ones, refer, to him as Captain King, and judging from some documents he very well may have been the captain of a vessel engaged in commerce.
